UPTET Eligibility Criteria 2026

The Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test (UPTET) 2026 is conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Board (UPBEB) to assess the eligibility of candidates aspiring to become teachers in government primary and upper primary schools across Uttar Pradesh. UPTET certification is mandatory for teaching positions in Classes 1 to 8 in UP government schools. The exam is conducted in two papers: Paper 1 for Primary Teacher (Classes 1-5) and Paper 2 for Upper Primary Teacher (Classes 6-8). Candidates can appear for both papers if they wish to teach at both levels. Understanding the complete eligibility criteria including educational qualifications, age limits, and category-wise relaxations is crucial before applying. This comprehensive guide covers all aspects of UPTET eligibility for 2026 to help you determine your qualification status.

Educational Qualification for UPTET 2026

The educational qualifications for UPTET vary based on the paper you wish to appear for. Candidates must meet the minimum qualification requirements as prescribed by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) norms. Below are the detailed requirements for each paper:

Age Limit for UPTET 2026

The age limit criteria for UPTET 2026 is notably relaxed compared to most other government examinations. The minimum age requirement is 18 years with no upper age limit (effectively 99 years for practical purposes). This liberal age policy ensures that candidates of all ages who have the required educational qualifications can pursue a teaching career in Uttar Pradesh government schools.

Age Relaxation Details for UPTET 2026

Since UPTET has no practical upper age limit, age relaxation provisions are primarily relevant for record-keeping and ensuring no candidate faces discrimination based on age. Here is a detailed explanation of age-related provisions for each category:

General Category

Candidates belonging to the General (Unreserved) category must be at least 18 years of age. There is no maximum age limit, making UPTET one of the most age-inclusive examinations in India. This policy recognizes that teaching ability is not diminished by age and allows experienced professionals or late career changers to enter the teaching profession.

Other Backward Classes (OBC)

OBC candidates from the Non-Creamy Layer enjoy the same age benefits as General category candidates. Since there is no upper age limit, additional relaxation is not applicable. OBC candidates must possess a valid OBC-NCL certificate issued by the competent authority of Uttar Pradesh.

Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST)

SC and ST candidates of Uttar Pradesh domicile are eligible to apply without any upper age restriction. The reservation benefits will apply during the appointment process post-UPTET qualification. Valid caste certificate from the appropriate authority is mandatory.

Persons with Disabilities (PwD)

Candidates with benchmark disabilities (40% or more disability) are eligible for PwD benefits. Since there is no upper age limit in UPTET, PwD candidates face no age-related barriers. The PwD certificate must be issued by a competent medical authority as per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

Ex-Servicemen

Ex-Servicemen receive an additional 3 years of age relaxation after deducting their military service period from their actual age. Given the already relaxed age criteria, this provision further benefits ex-servicemen candidates who wish to transition to teaching careers.

Nationality and Citizenship Requirements

To be eligible for UPTET 2026, candidates must fulfill the following nationality and citizenship criteria:

  • Indian Citizenship: The candidate must be a citizen of India

  • Domicile: While UPTET certificate is valid across India (as per Supreme Court ruling), preference during appointment may be given to UP domicile holders

  • Subjects of Nepal/Bhutan: Subjects of Nepal and Bhutan are also eligible, subject to production of eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India

  • Tibetan Refugees: Tibetan refugees who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanent settlement are eligible

  • Persons of Indian Origin: Persons of Indian origin who have migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, East African countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, and Vietnam with the intention of permanent settlement in India are eligible, provided they have a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India

Note: Candidates belonging to categories other than Indian citizens must produce a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India at the time of document verification.
